Treasured Pages: the "Little House" Books

Happy almost June, sweet friends!  I have missed you dearly, and I am so happy to be typing here and saying hello!  It is unbelievable to me that it will be summer as of next month.  I hope your spring has been full of delight and the loveliness of cool breezes, colors bursting forth in wildflowers and garden beauty, and other joys of the season thus far.

A sweet spot of my past several months has been reading through, and now approaching the end of, the "Little House" books by Laura Ingalls Wilder.  What an indescribably wonderful feeling to read the imagery-filled writing of an author whom you feel must have been one of your kindred spirits!  Laura's writing fills me up with an ever greater ardor for nature, nostalgia, tradition, and the intrinsic wonder of what it is to be alive.  I thoroughly enjoy her writing, and as I have read through these treasured books (my favorite series of books ever printed), I have loved marking and "collecting" quotes from her writing.
I thought it would be fun to share a few of my favorites here (also including a couple of beloved general quotes of hers), paired with some of my recent photography out among the wildflowers and garden that reminds me of some of the poignant passages she wrote.
Before getting to that, though, might I express a simple pleasure I was reminded of recently: that of gazing upon your worn, well-loved, somewhat tattered books of youth that line your shelves... to be sitting on your bedroom floor amid their stacks, admiring them and all the happy memories of getting perfectly lost in the pages of each one.  I think that scene right there, friends, is my own idea of the sweetness of girlhood☺
And what can be better for the bibliophile's soul than books and a cup of tea?
Not too many things, I suppose.

"Often a butterfly stopped to rest there.
Then Laura watched the velvety wings
slowly opening and closing,
as if the butterfly breathed with them."
(On the Banks of Plum Creek)

"The life of the Earth comes up with a
rush in the springtime."
(Farmer Boy)

"In the mornings, they ran through the dewy
chill grass that wet their feet and
dabbled the hems of their dresses."
(On the Banks of Plum Creek)

"Down the slope of the little hill...
patches of wild crocus spread yellow
and blue in the young grass..."
(By the Shores of Silver Lake)

"Some old-fashioned things like fresh
air and sunshine are hard to beat."

"We who live in quiet places have the
opportunity to become acquainted with
ourselves, to think our own thoughts and live
our own lives in a way that is not possible
for those keeping up with the crowd."

"All around them there was nothing
but grassy prairie spreading
to the edge of the sky."
(Little House on the Prairie)

"The meadows were rosy-purple with
the blossoms the bees loved best."
(Farmer Boy)

....And a few of my other favorites:

"Suffering passes, while love is eternal.
That's a gift you have received from God.
Don't waste it."

"The true way to live is to enjoy every
moment as it passes, and surely it is in the
everyday things around us that the
beauty of life lies."

"As you read my stories of long ago
I hope you will remember that things truly
worthwhile and that will give you
happiness are the same now as they were
then.  It is not the things you have that
make you happy.  It is love and kindness
and helping each other and just
being plain good."

  1. Dearest Jazzmin...
Oh, when I saw the delightful title of your post, I hopped over straight away for a lovely visit with you.
You see, the Little House books hold a special place in my heart. I have read them over and over again...they are like very dear, old friends to me! I believe my love for the countryside and simple life is partly owing to these beautiful stories.
I am busy reading Caddie Woodlawn for the first time - it is absolutely enchanting!
I think it is good to take a break back from the hustle and bustle of daily life, and enjoy a step back in time. A part of me wishes I lived in that era, I will admit...

Thank you for sharing these beautiful, inspirational quotes, dear friend. And your photographs are gorgeous!

    Blessings and love!

  2. Hello!
How nice to see you here this evening!
    Oh...those precious books.
I have the complete set, given to me in 1979 when I was 10.
They are worn and torn and loved....
I share your love of them, my friend.
My favorite is Little Town on the Prairie.
It has been a joy to share them with my own children. : )
Many happy thoughts for you this beautiful time of year!

  3. Oh I spent many an hour on the Prairie with Laura and her family when I was a girl. They were my favorite books at the library and I read them over and over again. On Young Sheldon last week we caught a glimpse of all his future friends as children and Amy Farah Fowler was in bed with a flashlight reading Little House on the Prairie. I loved that.

  4. Happy June! It's so great to read updates from you,Jazzman, thank you! ❤️

Aww,that's so nice that you have been enjoying the Little House on the Prairie books. I believe I never did finish the series when I was little, so you are encouraging me to read them again. 😉 They sound so lovely and I really like the quotes you shared, most especially the last three. ♥️

Do you have a favorite book in the series? Do you have the Little House on the Prairie recipe book? What other older books would you recommend? Maybe you could write a post some time on books that the Lord has used in your life. ❤️

Thank you, I hope you have a wonderful week too & looking forward to seeing pics of your sewing project! Love you dear sister! ♥️

    1. Dearest Natalie,
Oh thank you so much for blessing me so with your lovely note! What a joy to read it and be blessed by your visit. I am so glad you enjoyed the post and that it may have even encouraged you to read the Little House series again. If you do, you may even enjoy them more! I think there is so much to be appreciated in new ways as I read them from a young woman's perspective now.
In response, it is hard to select a favorite book in the series, but I must say I do delight so much in the coziness of the setting of the first book and then I enjoyed 'Little Town on the Prairie' for the new and exciting things happening in Laura's life.

I wish I had more time to read in the past few years so be able to recommend some older books, but most of them are on my shelf waiting to be read (and I can't wait to open them☺)... "Beautiful Girlhood" is one of those, and it looks amazing. You may have read or heard of it- if so, I'd love to know if you enjoyed it! Oh and one book I enjoyed sharing about a couple of years ago, concerning those that the Lord used in my life, is "Before You Meet Prince Charming" by Sarah Mally. It greatly convicted me on contentment and trusting the Lord in every area♥

Thank you again for your sweet message, this beautiful verse, and for your kind heart. And please forgive my busyness that has caused my reply to be so late.

Love to you always and God Bless you, Natalie!

    2. Dearest Jazzmin,
I always enjoy writing to you, sweet friend and don't worry about taking a while to respond, I completely understand. Aww, I'm very glad that I could bless you, dear sister! 😄♥️

Oh ok, thank you for sharing about your two favorite books in the Little House series and why you like them. I am looking forward to reading them! In my
free time I am currently reading The Bird's Nest by Christoph Von Schmid. Three beautiful short stories that have a moral to them.

"Beautiful Girlhood" sounds very familiar, so if I did read it, I don't remember, but I most definitely heard of it. Oh my, yes, I enjoyed and own Before You Meet Prince Charming. Have you read/heard of their other books? Sarah Mally and her siblings wrote one, "Making Brothers and Sisters Best Friends" and Grace Mally wrote one on witnessing called "Will Our Generation Speak".
Do you have a favorite book of the Bible and/or Bible verse?

Again, please respond in your time, I really don't mind. ;)
It's so nice hearing from you whenever; thank you for writing! I hope you have an amazing week! ❤️

      Love always,
      Natalie

    3. Dearest Natalie,
You are truly so sweet and your note blessed my day ever so much to read. I thank you so much for your kind understanding of my longer time to reply, as well... I have been doing a bit of traveling this summer, which has taken up much time, and then I will be starting a new job soon. So I pray I will be able to blog and write to dear friends like you on here as often as possible despite my schedule being busier.

I so enjoyed hearing about your current read. It sounds wonderful and will be going on my "to-read" list for sure :) How neat to read that you have read "Before You Meet Prince Charming", too, as well as about the other Mally-authored books. I hope to read them all at some point. Thank you for sharing the title Grace wrote on witnessing, I am especially looking forward to that one when I get the time to read it :)

Yes, one of my favorite verses for life is Proverbs 3:5-6 because it resonates so much with my heart and seeking God, praying he will bind my wandering heart to Him and His guidance. And it is so hard to pick an absolute favorite, but one of my favorite books is Colossians (especially chapter 3). And of course all of Jesus' words (love poring over my red-letter bible to see His words). Do you have a favorite book or verse, or even a "life verse"? :)

It is so lovely to get to write you today, dear friend, and thank you again for your message. I hope you have been truly blessed and are enjoying your summer!
Have you gone on, or are you looking forward to, any trips or new adventures this summer that you're excited about?

      Love and joy to you!
      Your sister in Christ,
      Jazzmin
